PfMP (Portfolio Management Professional) is PMI’s senior credential for people who manage a portfolio of programs and projects. It proves you can align that portfolio to business strategy, balance value against risk, and make the calls on which initiatives to fund, continue or stop.
With a four-year degree you need 96 months (8 years) of professional business experience plus 48 months of portfolio management experience. With a secondary degree the business experience stays at 96 months but the portfolio management requirement rises to 84 months. All portfolio experience must fall within the last 15 years and be non-overlapping.
For senior leaders in PMO, strategy or portfolio roles, it is one of the strongest signals available. Very few professionals hold it, and the panel review means your portfolio experience has been independently verified, which carries real weight in promotions and senior hiring.
PgMP certifies you to lead a single program of related projects. PfMP sits at the strategic level above that, certifying you to manage an entire portfolio of programs and projects and to decide how investment is allocated across them. PfMP is about choosing the right work; PgMP is about delivering a program well.
Work through PMI’s Standard for Portfolio Management and the exam content outline, practise situational questions on portfolio strategy, governance, performance and risk, and clear the application and panel review first. Structured mentoring helps most candidates, because the exam rewards judgement over memorisation. Our program covers the application, the exam and a full simulator.
As of 2026, the PMI exam fee is USD 800 for members and USD 1,000 for non-members, with reduced re-examination fees if you need another attempt. PMI membership is around USD 129 a year and usually pays for itself through the discount. Training and mentoring are separate, and the exam fee is paid only after your application clears the panel review.
PMI does not publish an official global pass rate for the PfMP. What we can share is our students’ first-attempt pass rate of 98.5% across 6000+ professionals mentored. For most candidates the harder gate is the application and panel review rather than the exam.
Most working professionals need a few focused months, with the application and panel review often taking as long as the exam prep itself. Our batches run across weekends so you can prepare without stepping away from work, and the WhatsApp group keeps you supported right up to exam day.
PMI’s salary research consistently shows certified professionals earn more than non-certified peers, and portfolio leaders sit near the top of the project, program and portfolio pay scale. Exact figures vary by country, industry and seniority, so treat PfMP as a move into more senior, better-paid roles rather than a fixed salary number.
You submit an online application with detailed summaries of your business and portfolio management experience. PMI reviews it, and approved applications go to a panel of certified professionals. Once you clear the panel you pay the exam fee and have a one-year window to pass. Application coaching is built into our program.
Look for a provider with proven results, genuine one-to-one application support and a live mentor rather than only recorded content. Augment Consultancy runs a live, mentor-led PfMP program with a 98.5% first-attempt pass rate and hands-on guidance through the PMI application and exam.
PMI looks for senior portfolio management experience: defining a portfolio, aligning it to strategy, governing it, balancing investment and managing portfolio-level risk and performance. Time spent running individual projects or programs does not count as portfolio experience, which is exactly the distinction we help you draw clearly in your application.
