PfMP vs PMP: Which Credential Fits Your Seat?
PfMP vs PMP comes down to your seat: PMP certifies you can deliver a project, PfMP certifies you can run a portfolio, and PfMP adds a panel review.

Key takeaways
- Choose PfMP only if you decide which initiatives get funded, ranked, paused or stopped, and you can document the months to prove it. If you deliver projects, PMP is the fit.
- PfMP needs 96 months of business experience plus 36, 48 or 84 months of portfolio experience, depending on your education, all inside the last 15 years.
- Many PMP holders should compare PMP with PgMP® (Program Management Professional) before PfMP, because coordinating related projects for a shared benefit is programme work, not portfolio work.
- Run the 20-job-ad tally in this article before spending on either credential. Your target employers' filters matter more than a general ranking of seniority.

The choice between PfMP and PMP is settled by arithmetic before it is settled by ambition. PMP is the Project Management Professional credential. PfMP is the Portfolio Management Professional credential. Both come from the Project Management Institute (PMI), and PfMP asks for months of portfolio experience that many strong project managers have not built up.
The two are closer in format than their reputations suggest: since 9 July 2026 the PMP exam has run for 240 minutes, the same as the PfMP exam, according to PMI's PMP exam update. What still separates them is the evidence. PfMP candidates must pass a panel review of written essays, graded by external experts, before they reach the exam, as PMI's June 2026 certification handbook sets out. The PMP process has no panel, so PfMP preparation starts well before you book an exam seat.
The useful question is which credential your documented work can support today, and which one the roles you want will reward.
PfMP vs PMP: which credential matches the work you do today?
The credential that matches is the one named after what you do all week. PMP covers delivering a single project to scope, schedule and cost. PfMP covers choosing, balancing and stopping a whole set of projects and programmes against strategy. PgMP sits between them.
| Your day-to-day work | Closest credential | The test |
|---|---|---|
| You plan and deliver a project: scope, schedule, cost, team | PMP® | You answer for one project's delivery |
| You coordinate several related projects so that together they land one business benefit | PgMP® | You answer for a benefit, not a deliverable |
| You decide which initiatives are funded, ranked, paused or stopped across programmes and projects | PfMP® | You answer for whether the whole investment paid off |
A portfolio is the set of projects and programmes an organisation manages together to meet its strategic objectives. A programme is a group of related projects managed together to obtain benefits that managing them separately would not. If you are unsure which seat you sit in, our page on program vs portfolio management walks through it.
PMP is not a prerequisite for PfMP. The two assess different responsibilities, and PMI sets PfMP's entry conditions on experience, not on holding another credential (PMI PfMP page).
How many months of portfolio experience does the PfMP require, and do you have them?
PfMP requires 96 months (8 years) of professional business experience within the last 15 years. It also requires portfolio management experience within the same 15 years: 84 months with a secondary-school qualification, 48 months with a bachelor's degree or higher, or 36 months with a bachelor's degree from a programme accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC) (PMI PfMP page).
Run this check on your own history. It takes three steps, and each is a separate test:
- Count your business months.Add every month of professional business experience in the last 15 years. Pass: 96 or more. Fail: fewer than 96.
- Count your portfolio months.Add only the months you worked on portfolio-level decisions, such as ranking, funding, balancing capacity or governing a set of initiatives. Pass: at or above your threshold (84, 48 or 36). Fail: below it. Months of delivering one project do not count here.
- Test your evidence. The panel reads essays, so for each stretch you counted, write down the portfolio, the decision you made and the result. Our recommendation: if you cannot name at least three specific decisions with an outcome for the period, you are not ready to write the application.
Two illustrative cases, built by us to show the arithmetic:
- Case 1. A bachelor's degree (not GAC-accredited), 13 years in IT delivery, and the last 3 years heading a Project Management Office (PMO) that ranks initiatives. Business months: 13 × 12 = 156, a pass. Portfolio months: 3 × 12 = 36 against a threshold of 48, a fail by 12 months. With a GAC-accredited degree the threshold would be 36, and the same history would pass.
- Case 2. A bachelor's degree, 15 years of experience, and 5 years running a quarterly investment review. Portfolio months: 5 × 12 = 60 against 48, a pass. Business months: 15 × 12 = 180, a pass.
If your portfolio months are zero, the answer today is not PfMP. It is PMP, or PgMP if you run programmes.
Why do many PMP holders compare the wrong two credentials?
Many PMP holders compare PMP with PfMP when their real fork is PMP versus PgMP. The reason is job titles. A senior project manager overseeing several related projects often has programme authority, which is authority over benefits, and not portfolio authority over funding and priorities.
The test is simple. If you are asked "how do we deliver these projects together?", you are in programme territory. If you are asked "which of these should we fund, and which should we stop?", you are in portfolio territory.
PgMP carries the same panel-plus-exam structure as PfMP (PMI certification handbook, June 2026), so choosing it does not avoid the evidence work. It does match the experience most project managers have already built.

What do the PfMP panel review and exam involve compared with the PMP exam?
PfMP has two gates, a panel review and an exam, and PMP has one, the exam. The PfMP panel consists of essay questions graded by external experts who hold the relevant certification, and you must pass the panel and the exam to be certified (PMI certification handbook, June 2026).

| Feature | PMP | PfMP |
|---|---|---|
| Panel review of essays | No | Yes |
| Exam | As of 9 July 2026: 180 questions (10 unscored), 240 minutes (PMI PMP exam update) | 170 questions (20 unscored), 240 minutes (PMI PfMP page) |
| Question style | Scenario-based | Scenario-based |
| Renewal | Every 3 years through professional development units (PDUs) | Every 3 years, 60 PDUs |
Both exams now run for 240 minutes, so exam length no longer separates the two credentials. The difference is the panel and the experience you must document before you reach the exam.
Other rules that apply to both, from PMI's handbook:
- All applications are subject to audit, though only a percentage are selected, and an audit can happen after certification.
- After approval you have one year and three exam attempts. If you were audited, the year starts on the day you are told you passed the audit.
- A fee applies again to the second and third attempts.
- After three failures you wait one year before reapplying.
What does PfMP cost compared with PMP, and what should you check before you pay?
As of 14 October 2026, the PfMP exam fee is US$800 for PMI members and US$1,000 for non-members (PMI PfMP page). The PMP exam fee is lower for both groups (PMI PMP page). A re-examination fee applies to the second and third PfMP attempts, and PMI shows the amount at payment (PMI certification handbook, June 2026).
At the RBI reference rate of ₹95.749 per US dollar on 12 October 2026, those fees are roughly ₹76,600 for members (800 × 95.749) and ₹95,700 for non-members (1,000 × 95.749), before taxes and card charges. The rupee amount moves daily, so treat it as an estimate.
Our own preparation prices for PfMP, as of October 2026 and listed in US dollars on our course store:
| Option | Price per enrolment |
|---|---|
| PfMP® Application Writing Support | US$199 |
| PfMP® Self-Paced Program | US$549 |
| PfMP® Fast Track Program (focused group mentoring) | US$1,100 |
Groups of three or more can receive discounts of up to 20%. Pricing varies by market. One example of how the parts add up, as our own arithmetic: application support plus the self-paced programme plus PMI's member exam fee is US$199 + US$549 + US$800 = US$1,548, before any retake fee.
Run this cost checklist before you pay anyone:
- Is your PMI membership active before you pay?Pass: the member fee (US$800 for PfMP) shows at checkout. Fail: the non-member fee (US$1,000) shows. The handbook applies the member rate only to candidates who joined before paying. Compare PMI's annual membership fee with the US$200 difference first.
- Have you budgeted a second exam fee?Pass: your plan includes a re-examination fee for attempts two and three. Fail: your plan assumes you pass first time.
- Is any rescheduling inside PMI's no-fee window?Pass: you change the date before the cut-off. In the handbook's example, an exam on 5 May must be rescheduled by 4 April. Fail: a late change costs US$70 plus taxes.
- Are tuition and PMI's fees on separate lines?Pass: your budget lists the exam fee and the preparation cost separately. Fail: one lump sum hides which part you are comparing.
Will employers in India reward PfMP or PMP?
Employers reward whichever credential their own job descriptions name. In our view, for most project-level and many programme-level roles that is PMP, and PfMP matters mainly at senior portfolio and PMO-leadership level. That is our judgement, not a measured result, so test it against the roles you want.
Run the 20-ad tally:
- Collect 20 current job descriptions in India for the roles you want in the next three years, from employers' own careers pages where possible.
- Mark each ad that names PMP, PgMP or PfMP, as required or preferred.
- Read the result against these thresholds, which are our recommendation:
- Pass for PMP first: 11 or more of the 20 ads name PMP and you do not yet hold it.
- Pass for PfMP now: 5 or more of the 20 name PfMP and you meet the months check above.
- Pass for PgMP now: 5 or more name PgMP and your work is programme-level.
- Otherwise, treat PfMP as a later step.
Counting ads shows which credentials employers name. It does not show how they weigh them in interviews. To judge whether a credential's cost is worth it, put a pay figure beside the role you are targeting: our guide to checking a program manager salary in India shows how.
