Program Management Course in India: Pick the Right Kind

Match the course to your logged months of experience. Below PMI's thresholds, take a foundation course. At or above them, buy PgMP preparation with application review. If you want a project management qualification for your CV, a university-style certificate fits, but it is not PgMP preparation.

A foundation course teaches program vocabulary and the program lifecycle. PgMP preparation teaches you to write your experience for a review panel and to pass a 170-question exam. A project management programme teaches project delivery. Courses titled "program management" can be any of the three, so check the syllabus before the fee.

Foundation courses. On Coursera, IBM's Introduction to Program Management runs seven hours across three modules. Microsoft's Program Management Fundamentals runs four modules, listed as "2 weeks at 10 hours a week". The full Microsoft Program Management Professional Certificate is seven courses totalling about 107 hours (16 + 15 + 12 + 14 + 14 + 16 + 20, the hours listed for each course). As of October 2026, enrolment is free. A foundation course covers vocabulary and the lifecycle. It does not cover application writing or exam technique. Project management programmes. The IIT Delhi Certificate Programme in Project Management is six months of live online classes with portfolio modules inside a project management curriculum. It suits someone who wants a project management qualification, not preparation built around PMI's program management credential.

PgMP preparation. This is the only kind built around PMI's two evaluations, set out next.

The PgMP needs 36 to 84 months of program management experience, depending on your education, plus 36 to 48 months of project management experience or a PMP (Project Management Professional) certification. All months must be unique, non-overlapping and within the last 15 years.

These thresholds, the exam length and the timeline come from PMI's PgMP handbook; the copy we checked is dated March 2024. PMI revised its general Certification Handbook in June 2026, so check PMI's PgMP page for any change before you apply.

What counts as program months. The panel looks for evidence that you were "responsible for the coordinated management of multiple, related component projects and directed toward a common organizational objective", under very limited supervision. Running one large project does not meet that test, however large it is.

The two evaluations.

1. The panel review consists of essay questions graded by panels of external subject matter experts who hold active program or portfolio certifications, per the June 2026 Certification Handbook. You must pass it and the exam to be certified.
2. The exam is 170 multiple-choice questions in four hours, taken either online with a remote proctor or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Twenty are unscored pretest questions, so 150 count (170 − 20).

Once your application is approved, you have one year to take the exam, with up to three attempts in that year. Fees are repaid for the second and third attempts. The exam fee depends on membership status and region, and PMI lists the current figure on its PgMP page. Our recommendation: if you are within a year of the threshold, start drafting your experience summaries now, while the last months accrue.

Augment foundation courses cost US$10 (Program Leadership Blueprint) to US$99 (Program Management Essentials). PgMP preparation runs from US$549 for self-paced mentorship to US$1,000 for group Fast Track, and Indian providers list ₹35,000 + GST (goods and services tax) to ₹3,72,295. Compare by hours received, not by headline price.

We publish this page, and our own programs are among those compared. Each figure below is the provider's own listed price as of October 2026. We bill in US dollars, and prices vary by market, so ask us for the rupee amount that applies to you. We do not convert currencies here.

How the per-hour column is worked out. It divides each listed fee by the hours the provider states: 35,000 ÷ 16 = ₹2,187.50 and 35,000 ÷ 15 = ₹2,333.33; 1,05,000 ÷ 100 = ₹1,050 at most, since IIT Delhi states "100+"; 99 ÷ 15 = US$6.60 at most; 549 ÷ 24 = US$22.88 at most; 1,000 ÷ 60 = US$16.67 at most. Hours are not equal units: ours includes recorded video and self-study, and the Proventures figure is contact hours. Compare within one currency, and use the column to prompt questions, not to rank.

Two comparisons stand out. Both the Knowledge Academy three-day PgMP (GST-exclusive, with an 18% GST rate listed on its page) and Proventures (+ GST) are quoted before GST, and the Knowledge Academy price is about 10.6 times the Proventures price (372,295 ÷ 35,000 = 10.64). And IIT Delhi's six-month programme (₹1,05,000 + GST) is listed below a one-day Knowledge Academy course (₹1,54,995, GST-exclusive). Run five tests in writing before you pay: live hours, application review, a full-length mock exam, a defined success rate, and a stated PDU count. Does the provider state how many hours are live and how many are recorded? Pass: written figures for both, plus the number of live sessions. Fail: no figure for live hours, or a "contact hours" total with no session count. A total that mixes the two, as in the table above, is only a starting point for the question.

Is your application read before you submit it? Pass: a named reviewer gives written feedback on your experience summaries, and support continues until PMI approves the application. Fail: a template pack, or a single read that ends before submission.

Is there a full-length mock exam? Pass: at least one timed mock of 170 questions in four hours. Fail: short quizzes only, or an untimed question bank.

Is the success rate defined? Pass: the claim states the cohort size, the period and what "first attempt" means. Fail: a success rate with no cohort, period or definition.

Does the certificate state a PDU count? Pass: the certificate shows a number of PDUs. Fail: "PDUs available" with no number.
