How to Become a Program Manager in India: Years, Roles, Rules
To become a program manager in India, build years of project or program delivery, own work that spans several teams, and add a certificate only when its rules fit.

Key takeaways
- To become a program manager, own an outcome that depends on several teams and record it as you go. You do not need the title first.
- "Program manager" covers three jobs: operations, technical and strategy-and-benefits. Choose one before you study, because each asks for different evidence.
- Postings ask for years of delivery far more often than for a certificate. Add a credential last, and only one that fits the job you chose.
- PMI's eligibility rules, not a vacancy, decide whether you can apply for the PgMP, so check them before you plan study time.

Demand is not the obstacle. The Project Management Institute (PMI) projects, in its 2025 Global Project Management Talent Gap report, that India will be short of about 2.9 million project professionals by 2035, even in its low-growth scenario. PMI defines project professionals as people who spend most of their working time on project work.
The obstacle is the route. In the postings we analyse below, most vacancies ask for years of delivery, not a certificate. So people study for the Project Management Professional (PMP) or Program Management Professional (PgMP) credential and still wait for a title that never arrives.
The phrase also covers three different jobs. Advice that suits an operations role can steer you away from a strategy role, and the reverse, which is why readers can spend months preparing for the wrong one.
This page separates the jobs, shows what the postings ask for, and gives you steps and a record template to start building your evidence this week.
How do you become a program manager in India?
Move from completing tasks to owning an outcome that depends on several teams, and keep that ownership for several years. The job title is not a prerequisite. In Amazon India's 176 program manager postings counted on 3 October 2026, non-senior titles most often ask for 3 years of experience and senior titles for 5.
We recommend four steps, in this order:
- Choose the job type first. Operations, technical or strategy-and-benefits (explained below). Everything else depends on it.
- Find an outcome that crosses at least three functions in your current job. A product launch, a vendor consolidation or a platform migration will do. Ask your manager to name you as owner of the result, not of a task list. Pass: your name sits next to the result in a plan, charter or email that others can see. Fail: your name appears only against tasks, so ask again for the result.
- Keep an ownership record from the first month. PMI's PgMP handbook asks for a program's objective, your role and its measurable benefits, not your job title. Our template, one per outcome:

| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Objective | One sentence stating the result, not the activity: "cut returns", not "ran three releases" |
| Teams involved | Each function whose work the result depends on, at least three |
| Your decision rights | Decisions you could take without escalating, such as trading scope, setting sequence or moving people between workstreams |
| Measured benefit | The number, its unit, the date it was measured and who confirmed it |
| Dates | Start month and end month |
Pass: every field is filled, the benefit has a number and a date, and at least one decision rights entry is a decision you actually took. Fail: the record says "supported" or "coordinated" with no decision, so take on a decision before you write it up.
- Add a credential last, and only the one that fits the job you chose.
What is the difference between a project manager and a program manager?
A project manager delivers one defined piece of work to its scope, cost and schedule. A program manager owns a group of related projects, called component projects, and the business result they produce together. PMI's handbook adds that the program manager initiates those projects, assigns project managers to them and keeps scope aligned with strategy.
The quickest test is how success is measured. "The release shipped" is project success. "Three releases together cut returns" is program success. If your current measure is the first kind, take on work measured the second way.
The route in does not have to run through project coordination. Amazon India's 176 postings span 18 job categories, from supply chain and fulfilment to software development and human resources. Our inference is that the role is not confined to project-office careers.
What do program manager postings in India ask for?
Most program manager postings ask for years of delivery, not a certificate. In Amazon India's 176 program manager postings counted on 3 October 2026, 143 state a minimum number of years of program or project management, the median is 5, 7 name the PMP and 2 name the PgMP.
How we counted. On 3 October 2026 we pulled the results of Amazon's India search for "program manager" (Amazon Jobs). It returned 207 postings. We kept the 176 whose titles contain "program manager" or "programme manager", dated 7 April to 30 September 2026; 103 are in Bengaluru and 57 in Hyderabad. We read the basic and preferred qualifications of each. "Senior" means a title containing Senior, Sr, Snr or Principal; "non-senior" means every other title. Years come from the line asking for "N+ years" of program or project management.
| Group | Postings | State years | Median years | Most common ask |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Senior titles | 78 | 65 | 5 | 5 years (56 postings) |
| Non-senior titles | 98 | 78 | 3 | 3 years (36), 2 years (23) |
| All 176 | 176 | 143 | 5 | 5 years (73) |
The other 33 postings state no years in that wording. Skills and credentials named in the same 176 postings, with SQL meaning Structured Query Language, used to pull data from databases:
| Named in | Basic qualifications | Preferred qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Excel | 53 | 3 |
| SQL | 38 | 28 |
| Bachelor's degree | 65 | 5 |
| MBA (Master of Business Administration) | 2 | 42 |
| PMP | 1 | 6 |
| PgMP | 0 | 2 |
Two limits apply. Amazon is one employer, and its India roles lean towards operations, so these figures show one large employer's pattern, not the whole market. Counting what postings name shows the skills and credentials they name, not what interviews test. Within those limits, our inference is that the shortest route into a first operations program manager job is a record of delivery plus fluency in Excel and SQL, and that a certificate adds little at that stage.
Which program manager job are you aiming at?
The title covers three jobs: an operations or business program manager, a technical program manager (TPM) who delivers engineering work, and a strategy-and-benefits program manager, the role PMI defines and the PgMP certifies. Each asks for different evidence, so choose one before planning your next two years.

| Job | What Amazon India's postings show | Years asked | Credential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operations or business | 87 postings in Amazon's non-technical program management category; Excel in the basic qualifications of 35, SQL in 27 | 74 state years: 13 ask 2, 23 ask 3, 34 ask 5, 4 ask 7 or more | Required in 1 of the 87 (PMP) |
| Technical (TPM) | 37 postings in the technical category; none names Excel or SQL as a basic qualification | 30 state years: 22 ask 5 | Required in none |
| Strategy and benefits | Defined by PMI's handbook, not by a posting count: strategic alignment, component projects, measurable benefits | PgMP months, set out below | PgMP |
The other 52 postings sit in categories such as fulfilment, supply chain and software development and are not in this table. The grouping is our reading of Amazon's own categories.
The five-posting test (our recommendation). Open five postings you would genuinely apply for. Mark each as operations (names Excel, SQL, metrics, process), technical (names engineering systems) or strategy (names benefits, governance, portfolio). Pass: at least three of the five fall in one type, and that is your target. Fail: they split across types. Narrow your shortlist, because preparing for all three dilutes the evidence you can show.
Do you need a certificate to become a program manager?
Rarely. In Amazon India's 176 postings counted on 3 October 2026, 1 required the PMP and none required the PgMP. The PgMP matters mainly for the strategy-and-benefits job, and PMI's eligibility rules, not the vacancy, decide whether you can apply.
PMI's PgMP handbook, revised 11 March 2024, sets these minimums, all within the last 15 years:
| Education | Project management experience | Program management experience |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary diploma, associate degree or equivalent | 48 months, or an active PMP | 84 months |
| Four-year degree or higher | 48 months, or an active PMP | 48 months |
| Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a programme accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center | 36 months, or an active PMP | 36 months |
Months must be professional and non-overlapping, though they need not be paid. An active PMP replaces only the project months, never the program months. Check PMI's PgMP page for the current rules before you apply.
To count your own months, follow our PgMP application eligibility guide. If your title never said program manager, read why PgMP eligibility does not depend on a program manager title. For how to sequence the two credentials, see our PMP to PgMP transition guide.

Frequently asked questions
Program manager is the usual next step, provided the role means owning several related projects and their combined result. A title alone does not make it so. Above programs sit portfolio roles, which PMI certifies through the Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP).
