MSP Certification in India: Exams, True Cost and PgMP Choice

MSP certification is PeopleCert's two-level programme management qualification: a Foundation exam, then a Practitioner exam that builds on it, with the exam voucher included in some training prices and not in others.

Key takeaways

  • MSP certification means two PeopleCert exams. As of October 2026, PeopleCert's two exam bundles total US$1,479 before taxes, about ₹1,41,613 at the 12 October 2026 reserve bank rate (our model). One Indian course lists both exams inside ₹99,995.
  • The Foundation exam is closed book and the Practitioner exam is open book. Both need 60% to pass.
  • Choose MSP when you need a working programme method now. Choose PgMP® when your months of project and programme experience meet PMI's minimum. Taking both is a sound plan.
  • The official 5th edition guide comes as an eBook inside PeopleCert's exam bundles, so a free PDF of unknown origin is unnecessary.

Two Indian providers list MSP training at ₹6,999 and ₹99,995 as of October 2026. The cheaper price excludes the exam, and the dearer one includes both. MSP stands for Managing Successful Programmes, and the gap between those two prices comes from what each one covers, not from the quality of teaching.

This page explains how the two exams work and works out the rupee cost of each route. It also gives a five-question sheet for choosing between MSP and PgMP® (Program Management Professional), the credential from the Project Management Institute (PMI).

We publish this page and sell PgMP® preparation. We do not sell MSP training, and we award neither credential. We state where each credential fits, including where MSP is the better choice for a reader in India.

What is MSP certification, and is it the same as PRINCE2 Programme Management?

MSP certification is the PeopleCert qualification for people who run programmes, meaning groups of related projects managed together to deliver benefits that the projects would not deliver alone. PeopleCert now groups it under "PRINCE2 Programme Management" (PRINCE2 is PeopleCert's project management method brand). The exams are still titled MSP Foundation and MSP Practitioner, 5th edition.

This page covers Managing Successful Programmes. Microsoft's Azure Expert managed services provider designation is a different thing: a company-level partner status, described on Microsoft Learn.

MSP is guidance and a method: roles, governance themes, a programme lifecycle and a way of managing benefits. It is not a PMI credential, and it does not replace PgMP®.

How do the MSP Foundation and Practitioner exams work?

The Foundation exam tests whether you know MSP's terms and structure, and the Practitioner exam tests whether you can apply them to a scenario. As of October 2026, PeopleCert lists these formats on its Foundation and Practitioner pages.

A candidate sits at a home desk taking an exam on a laptop with a webcam attached.
Each MSP exam is sat as a timed, supervised sitting, which is why the format and rules matter before you book.

You cannot sit Practitioner first. A budget that covers only the Foundation exam is incomplete if your goal is the Practitioner level.

What does MSP certification cost in India once the exam voucher is counted?

A course that includes both exams costs ₹99,995 at The Knowledge Academy India, while PeopleCert's own two exam bundles total US$1,479, about ₹1,41,613 in our model, before card charges and taxes. Check whether any price you are quoted includes a PeopleCert exam voucher, because that decides what you are comparing.

PeopleCert lists its prices in US dollars, and taxes may be added at checkout, so confirm the final amount there.

How do these routes compare in rupees?

This is our model, not an official price. The formula is the US dollar price multiplied by the Reserve Bank of India reference rate of ₹95.749 per US dollar on 12 October 2026 (the RBI reference rate series). All amounts are before card charges and any GST (goods and services tax) or other taxes.

  • Both PeopleCert exam bundles: US$1,479 (US$701 + US$778) × 95.749 = about ₹1,41,613.
  • Both PeopleCert eLearning options: US$3,089 (US$1,421 + US$1,668) × 95.749 = about ₹2,95,769.
  • Foundation only, Delhi e-learning plus the PeopleCert Foundation bundle: ₹6,999 + (US$701 × 95.749 = about ₹67,120) = about ₹74,119.
  • Both levels, The Knowledge Academy India: ₹99,995 with both exams included.

On these inputs, the Knowledge Academy course is about ₹41,618 lower than buying both PeopleCert bundles directly (₹1,41,613 minus ₹99,995). The comparison is not like for like: the course adds live or guided teaching, and the bundles add the official eBook and kit. The rupee figures move with the exchange rate, so redo the multiplication on the day you buy.

Which four questions should you ask before paying for an MSP course?

Run these four checks on any quote. Each has a clear pass or fail.

  1. 1
Is a PeopleCert exam voucher included for both levels?
Pass: the seller writes "Foundation and Practitioner exams included". Fail: the exam is described as separate or not mentioned.
  2. 2
    Is it the 5th edition?
Pass: the page names the 5th edition. Fail: no edition is named, or it names the 4th.
  3. 3
What happens if you fail an exam?
Pass: the price states a free re-take (as in PeopleCert eLearning+) or names a re-sit option offered at checkout. Fail: no re-take terms are given.
  4. 4
Is the price in the currency you will be charged?
Pass: a total in rupees at checkout. Fail: a dollar price you must convert yourself.

Should you take MSP Foundation only, or both levels?

Plan for both levels if MSP will appear on your CV for programme roles, and take Foundation alone only if you want the vocabulary. Foundation is closed book and tests recall. Practitioner is open book and tests application to a scenario. This is our recommendation, based on what each exam tests.

A sensible sequence is Foundation first, then time to practise the 5th edition guide against scenarios, then Practitioner. The Practitioner exam runs for 150 minutes, so practise locating material in the guide quickly rather than reading it for the first time in the exam.

MSP or PgMP: which programme management credential fits you?

MSP fits when you need a working method now. PgMP® fits when your documented months of project and programme experience meet PMI's minimum and you want that experience assessed. The two measure different things, so the choice turns on your experience and on who will read your CV.

US$800 for PMI members, US$1,000 for non-members (PMI PgMP page)

PMI membership is optional and lowers the PgMP® exam fee. PMI's handbook says you pay when you submit the application, and the fee is refunded if the panel review fails twice. Our PgMP exam cost calculator works out the total for members, non-members and retakes. The MSP bundles include an eBook and kit, so the two prices do not cover the same things.

What is the five-question MSP-or-PgMP decision sheet?

Each question has a test, with a pass and a fail.

  1. 1
Do your months meet PMI's minimum?

Add up your unique, non-overlapping months of project management and programme management within the last 15 years. Pass: both totals meet the row for your education in the table above, and a PMP can stand in for the project side. Our page on PgMP eligibility without a programme manager title shows how experience is judged. Fail: take MSP now and keep logging months.

  2. 2
Which credential do target employers name?
Open ten postings for the roles you want. Our rule of thumb: pass for a credential if three or more of the ten name it, and choose that one. Fail: none name either, so go to question 3.
  3. 3
Which method do your target programmes follow?
Ask two people in the PMO of an employer you want to join. Pass for MSP: both name MSP or a PRINCE2-based method. Fail for MSP: they name PMI's standards or no method, which favours PgMP®.
  4. 4
    Is the total written down?
Pass: you have a rupee total, using the worked model above for MSP or US$800/US$1,000 times the exchange rate for PgMP®, and you can fund it. Fail: you hold only a course price with no exam voucher in it.
  5. 5
Do both credentials pass the earlier tests?
Pass: tests 1 and 4 pass for PgMP® and test 4 passes for MSP, so you can plan both, taking first the one that question 2 favoured. Fail: take only the credential that passes.

Is the MSP PDF free, and which guide should you study from?

You do not need a free PDF: PeopleCert's Foundation bundle (US$701) and Practitioner bundle (US$778) each include the official eBook, listed on its Foundation and Practitioner pages. The exams are titled 5th edition and the Practitioner prerequisite refers to a 4th edition, so a file of unknown origin may be the wrong edition.

For the open-book Practitioner exam, PeopleCert's help pages allow a paperback you may annotate and tabulate, but no sticky notes or loose-leaf papers. They also allow the eBook on a second portable device such as a phone, tablet or laptop, and an electronic copy of the guidance is available in the exam interface. Practise with whichever format you will use on the day.

An open printed guide with sticky tabs and a pencil on a tidy study desk.
A single official guide, tabbed and annotated, is the study material that matters, not a loose free PDF.
